Mechanism of Action
Snap-8 competitively interferes with the assembly of the SNARE complex (comprising SNAP-25, syntaxin, and VAMP/synaptobrevin), the molecular machinery responsible for docking and fusing neurotransmitter-containing vesicles to the presynaptic membrane. By reversibly disrupting this complex, Snap-8 is studied for its ability to reduce neurotransmitter and acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions — without permanently cleaving or damaging the target SNARE proteins, unlike botulinum toxin.
