Bacteriostatic water is the recommended diluent for reconstituting lyophilized research materials — providing a preserved, multi-use solution that maintains the integrity of reconstituted research materials across multiple withdrawal events in the laboratory setting.
Why Use Bacteriostatic Water for Research Material Reconstitution?
Unlike plain sterile water or saline, bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits bacterial and fungal growth in the reconstituted solution. This is critical in research settings where a single reconstituted research material vial may be accessed repeatedly over days or weeks. Using unpreserved water risks microbial contamination that could compromise experimental validity. This solution extends the usable shelf life of reconstituted research materials by up to 28 days when stored at 4°C.
